First Cousin Twice Removed ?

Filed under: geek, music & film

ok this is totally random.. I made a note to blog about this a few weeks ago :p and I just came across that note.

Have you ever heard of the term “first cousin twice removed”, or “second cousin once removed”, etc. Do you know what they mean? I’ve been wondering about what the “Once Removed” really means everytime I heard or read about it but I didn’t find out until recently during one of those days when I felt bored and I just googled random stuffs.. I don’t remember what made me look this term up..

And wikipedia as usual provides the information I was looking for. ..

So… the cute kids I’ve been referring to as my nephews and nieces (they are my first cousins’ children) are actually my first cousins once removed! And so is Meggie who is actually my mom’s first cousin…. she’s also my first cousin once removed! hehehe .. the Removed part is used to describe a different in generation…

I bet a lot of people reading this blog didn’t know about this before :p there.. now you learn something new about Genealogy.

What a weekend

Friday night began with a Halloween picnic at Donner Park with people from work. It was raining so the turnout was really bad. I only went because I am a part of the group that organized the event.  There were 84 people who RSVP-ed but I’m guessing only about 20+ showed up, I don’t blame the others for skipping. Who would want to eat out in a park on a rainy day ? But it was fun for those who came.I helped decorating the shelter with fake spider webs, it was pretty cool !  And everybody got to carve a pumpkin because we had enough for everyone!  Stupid me I didn’t know that we’re supposed to cut the top and take out the inside first. I did that after looking around and saw everybody else doing that, but then I did another stupid thing – I threw away the top ! So my pumpkin at that time looks like an empty round bowl with a big opening. I had no clue what I wanted to make so I ended up just making diamond patterns on the pumpkin. Black_cat_1 Suddenly we heard a big THUMP sound – some big tree branches fell down and hit somebody’s car. The car got quite damaged. When Andy and I approached the cop who came to record the accident  (we wanted to ask where we could donate leftovers food – we had probably $200 worth of KFC), there’s this black cat that kept crossing the parking lot back and forth. Andy asked if I knew about the superstition about a black cat crossing our path = bad luck hehehhee yeah yeah yeah..

Afterwards I went straight to Kas & Shahreel’s house around as I promised to help them with preparation for their party until it’s time to pick up Hendrik from the airport. When I got there, the family just came back from groceries – they were still unloading stuffs from their car. Hendrik would arrive in Indy at 11PM, so I could stay there for a couple of hours. Feli and Patty came too and soon we started working in the kitchen. Feli was assigned to peel the onions haha, Patty had the chopping job :  lemongrass, onions, etc. I was asked to cut a pineapple. It was my first time ever cutting a real pineapple, why can’t we just use canned pineapples chunks ? hehehe it was not an easy task you know ! Oh then we found out that the blender was not working!

Magbulbody
We tried a food processor, but it was also not working !! So finally we used the magic bullet, which is a small blender intended for 1 serving of smoothie to blend onions, sardines, mackarel, lemon grass, etc… so we had to blend each food in several batches.

Hendrik left me a voicemail saying that his flight from Austin was delayed for an hour, I checked online and found out that he wouldn’t arrive in Indy until past midnight, so I had an extra hour to help out. I left the house at 11.15 ( estimated driving time of 45 minutes to the airport ) — it was still raining. I backed my car out of the driveway and BUMP !!! @&$#@& I hit somebody’s car !!!!!!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!   I came out and saw that I had hit Feli’s car, her car was damaged at the driver side. I called her inside the house to let her know and to say SORRY !!! oh man, it must be the black cat ! :p  Later that night the girls found out that the garbage disposal wasn’t working either !! What’s going on ?! Spooky ! Luckily my car was just scratched a little bit. Feli made me feel better by saying  "Ok ok ga papa ga papa, gampang lah" when I told her that I’ll compensate her to fix the damage.  Dui BU Qi !

Img_0414_1Img_0412_1 Onionpeeling
the middle picture was Feli crying when she found out about her car – hehe no lah, her glasses got foggy when she was peeling the onions.

I continued driving to the airport -I got there around midnight,  but Hendrik didn’t come out until around 12.30AM – we went home straight and got home around 1.30AM.

Saturday morning I woke up at 9AM and started preparing tapioca pearls (sago) and konyaku to make Melon Sago for the party. I had to make a quick trip to Walmart just to buy a strainer for the tapioca.  I got back from Walmart around 11AM and Hendrik was still sleeping. Patty, who spent the night at Kas’, called me at noon and asked why I was still home and that I need to get there ASAP! I just got out of the shower that time. She said Kas already loooked so stressed because it’s 2 hours to the party and they still had so much to do!! They needed help ! At first Hendrik suggested to go somewhere to eat first before the party but when I told him that we were already "summoned" he quickly showered and we got there at 12.30PM.

Decoration Kas, Mimi, and Patty said they cooked until 5AM and they woke up at 9AM and went back cooking. Hendrik and Shahreel went to Sam’s club to get the birthday cake and ice and last minute stuffs…. oh btw the party was a dual celebration -  Tsaqib’s 2nd Bday as well as Lebaran. Feli this time she was put in charge of decoration hehehe she’s really creative with the balloons, Kas said now she knows who to contact for decorations for future gatherings.

Patty and I prepared the melon sago dessert. Ta-da..  this is the result.. pretty isn’t it ? Melonsago
By 2PM, we’re all ready and the guests started arriving.

Img_0422_1 The hostess and the Menu :
- Laksa Kelantan (kuah laksa + thick noodle)
- Nasi Kerabu
- Chicken Rice (Nasi, Ayam, Kuah, Tomato, Cucumber, Lettuce)
- Nasi Beriyani (Pulau Rice, Goat Curry, Acar, Dal)
- Nasi Impit / Lontong, Sambal Kacang
- Ayam Masak Merah
- Rendang Daging
- Kari Daging
- Sambal Ikan Bilis
- Lodeh
- Shrimp Curry
- Mutton Dish (like Dry rendang)

mmm I need to get the list of food from Kas.. I couldn’t remember what else was there

Yummy yummy yummy ! – Hendrik already asked me several times since Saturday for me to learn how to cook the Chicken Rice and suggested that we try making them for Thanksgiving :D

Friendster
Last month I asked Hendrik if he wants to come down here on 10/22 or 10/28.  Btw this week was our 7th Anniversary. :) If he had come here last weeked, we’d have more time to spend together, and it would be more relaxing, but Hendrik chose to come down this weekend because of this party ! He didn’t want to miss all the good food! hehe ..   Although he was exhausted from this short trip,  there’s no regret :)

Here’s the bday boy with the proud parents. Look at all the gifts ! Tsaqib is a lucky boy !

I think there must be around 40 people who came .. but still plenty of leftovers. so we who stayed in until the end got plenty of ziplock bags to da-bao the food hihihihi. By "the end", I meant until the kitchen and dining room was back to Friday night’s condition, all pots, pans, dinnerware, table, chairs, clean and back in their place. Kathy did most of the dishwashing hehe. Everything’s done around 8pm. It’s all because we started the party in time and all the extra hands that helped — besides the hosts, I think Patty worked the hardest :) Thanks guys !

more pictures of the party here

Hendrik wanted to watch some movies when we got home.. and we ended up watching 3 movies back-to-back until almost 3AM :  Dragon Tiger Gate, a HongKong movie, The Art of Fighting, a Korean movie, and The Amityville Horror.  what a mix, eh ?
Dragontigergate Artoffighting_p Horor

so there goes our Saturday.  Sunday, Hendrik panicked when he saw the it’s already noon when we woke up and told me to take a shower right away but then he realized it was Daylight Savings Time and we earned 1 hour  so it’s actually still 11AM.  He was so happy when he realized this, I didn’t understand why he was so happy just because we got an extra hour :)

We went to Sichuan restaurant in Carmel for a late lunch, I was so sleepy afterwards… but we still had plenty of time before he needed to get to the airport so we killed time at Castleton Square Mall, and then Best Buy, and TJ Maxx,  and we still got to the airport 2 hours before his scheduled flight. Unfortunately there wasn’t any earlier flight that he could get into. Hendrik told me to go home and rest because I was so sleepy and tired – I reached home even before his plane left Indy.

A few hours later Hendrik called me from Dallas. Guess what ??  His flight to Austin was delayed again !! He swore he’ll never fly American Airlines again!!  Originally he was supposed to arrive in Austin at 10PM, but he didn’t get there until 12.30AM ! And then he had to wait a while for the baggage so he didn’t reach home until 1.30AM ! Hahaha I thought it was funny when Hendrik specifically told me to blog about this ! He was so pissed with AA.

Lamaran

I finally received the pictures from my lamaran day from 2 weeks ago from Yuli. Btw what is lamaran in English?  a Proposal ? hmm no.  an Engagement ?  doesn’t seem right either. Hendrik said it’s a Betrothal.  Sounds very old-fashioned hihihi

but it was indeed a very traditional custom that quite surprisingly Hendrik’s family is still folllowing hehe…  just look at the pics :)

Lots of unfamiliar faces in there…and I’m trying to estimate how many people in total were there. I know for sure it’s 18 people from Hendrik’s side hihi.. and from my side I counted at least 20 who were in the pictures! Boy I really wonder what they all talked about hahaha.

I will get the picture CD in about a week or so. I’ll have to go through them with Hendrik and will ask him who everyone is. Will do the same about my side of the family hehe.

For the curious minds, read this posting about the Indonesian/Chinese customs for marriage – I actually found this by googling; I wanted to know the meaning of all these traditions that our parents never cared to explain to us… it’s a pretty interesting read.

In for one PS3 mwuahaha will sell for profit

Yesterday Hendrik went to BestBuy and ToysRUs to ask about PS3 preorders and both stores said they’re not taking any pre-orders, it will be first come first served and each store nationwide will probably only have 5-10 in stock per store due to the limited release..  This whole PS3 launch fiasco is crazy. Last week I read that GameStop and EBGames sold out on all of their pre-orders within minutes !!  And then PS3 preorders started showing up on eBay and heard that it was reaching crazy numbers like $3000 a piece. The system is offered at 2 levels : $500 and $600.  Then eBay pulled all these auctions and ban anything that has to do with PS3 until launch date.   So Hendrik was thinking about camping in front of BestBuy overnight hahaha to get one of these..  he asked me to redeem some of our ThankYou points (rewards from Citi credit card) for some BestBuy Giftcards ..  To my surprise, there’s PS3 picture on the website !!! So without much thinking I redeemed 46,000 points – which I would value at $460  for one PS3.  I think it will be for the basic model (MRSP = $500)  .. and I’m not paying any tax or shipping so this is a really good deal..  I just hope that we’ll really get this next month… because it says "Will Ship when item becomes available"..  so there’s a possibility that I won’t get one until 2007….  hope that won’t be the case..

Car shopping & internet scam
October 16, 2006, 4:10 pm

So my youngest brother is still shopping for his first car…  he’s already checked out quite a few cars for a test drive…  but still hasn’t bought one yet. Well the check I sent him hasn’t cleared yet  although the money was already deducted from my account more than a week ago… I didn’t expect that an out-of-state check would take this long to process.   The bank promised that the money would become available on the 20th, this Friday, which is also his appointment date for the driving test to get a driver’s license… so he’s already told me that he will buy a car as soon as he got the money and the license.

His ideal car is Infiniti FX35 – with a black or orange exterior, black leather interior, with Sport and Technology Package (Navigation System, Intellicruise, premium wheels, etc etc) .. with Bose Audio (which comes as a standard equipment) .. this brand new it would cost more than almost $50K !!!! that’s about my first year salary ! … he’s been looking at the used market,  and there’s quite a few 2003 models out advertised for $31K-$34K .. there are some that are a little cheaper, closer to the $29K-$30K but they wouldn’t have the premium package that he very much desires.   Anyways… for me that just seems TOO MUCH for a used car !!  I bought my car brand new almost 6 years ago for much less than that ( I think it was $26K out the door ) and it was top of the line Accord hehehe at that time… and then what about all the costs for insurance, maintenance, gas, etc… clearly he’s not given much thought about that.. anyways our parents already gave him a budget to spend.. and it’s their money..up to them to spend.

So ..anyways last night he saw an ad on Seattle’s Craiglist for this car (pic below) only for $7,000 it seems too good to be true !! there wasn’t much detail on the ad but he went ahead and contacted the seller asking why he is selling it that cheap ?

So here’s the reply

Hello,
and thank you for your interest in my Infinity. First of all please accept my apologies for my late reply but most of my time I am at the hospital with my daughter because she suffers from a heart disease and I have to be there for her. I hope you can understand me. The car looks and runs exactly as new. The titles is clean, and you will receive it along with the car , so you will have no problems whatsoever registering  it there. VIN Number:  JNRAS08W83X206492, Miles:  39600, Automatic Trans.

I hope you are serious in your intention for buying, don`t take it personally, but I had many problems with fake buyers in the past. So if you decide on buying the car, I want the deal closed only through eBay`s Safe Purchase program. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. After you receive the FX and you inspect it, the money will be released to me, in this way we are both protected. Anyway, the car is available and I guess you could be its new owner if everything turns out all right and, again, you are serious about buying. I am located in Zagreb, Croatia. I moved here a few months ago, brought the car with me, but  unfortunatelly I am not able to register it here, as it has US specs and emission stanards, non compliant with European regulations. My final price on it  is 7000$. If you will take this price, I am willing to pay for shipping and insurance to your location. Please get back to me A.S.A.P. if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction details from them.

huahahaha who would be stupid enough to trust this guy ? I ran a carfax report on the VIN and it shows that on Sept 28, 2006 – which is about 2 weeks ago, this particular car was listed on a dealer’s inventory !! How in the world it could be in Croatia right now ?  And who would bring their car when they migrate overseas ?  (btw anybody wants to run a carfax report this month, let me know because I paid for the unlimited reports for this month). And what’s with the daughter’s heart disease ?

Lung2’s response to that :

Well, I’m serious about buying the car as I’ve been a big fan of Infiniti FX. However, I have a few questions before I could decide to buy the car. Are you the original owner of the car? How long would it take for the car to be back here? How long precisely have you been living in Crotia and what is the reason you brought the car there? Thanks.

And he replied again just now.

Hello there,

I am the first and only owner of the car. I moved here because I about 27 years ago I married a beautiful Croatian and now we decided to retire here. The reason I suggested using eBay`s program is so we can be both protected. Here is how it will be done : As soon as I will have your full name and address I will forward it to eBay and they will send you and Invoice with all the details of our transaction. You will have to send the money to them and as soon as they inform me that they hold the money I will proceed with shipping. Your money will remain with them untill you will have the car there for inspection and confirm that you agree with it`s present condition. ONLY then they will release the money to me. If you find it unsatisfactory in any way I agree to have it shipped back on my expence. I will allow you 72 hours for inspecting the car, I hope that is enough.

Shipping will not cost me that much, as my wife used to work for Lufthansa here and now, although she is retired, she still has great discounts with the company. That is why i offered to pay for shipping in the first place. Shipping will take between 5 to 7 days tops.  Remember that no money will be released to me untill you have the car there.

I require a 3500 USD deposit prior to shipping and the rest of the amount to be sent after you have the car there and confirm that you agree with it`s present condition.

I will be waiting for your reply and for the details requested. Have a great day there.

What do you think ?  From the beginning the low price of $7000 already raised a red flag for me.. when I read Croatia, heck I don’t even know where in the world that is.  I know it’s not anywhere near Seattle.   And when I went back to craigslist his ad was already not there… hmmm
